Past Learning Series: Myths & Realities: The curious person’s guide to cannabis – July 2019

Join Third Age Learning Niagara for an inside look at the newly legalized plant, cannabis. Each session offers a fun and unique perspective from the history of the drug to a full tour of a local growing facility. This series is for those curious to learn more and become aware of the truths of what cannabis is and does. There are four sessions included in the one time fee and each session is sure to be interactive and illuminating.

Each Thursday in July from 10am to 12pm.

July 4, 10 A.M. – 12 P.M.  – The History and Evolution of Cannabis: From Prohibition to Legalization with Alan Unwin, Associate Dean, School of Environmental and Horticultural Studies, Niagara College

This session will involve an overview and historical representation of cannabis that created the stigma that still exists today. Join us as we explore:

  • The legal framework
    • The stigma: why is it hanging on?
    • Interesting videos that exist showing hysteria in the past to create fear
    • The legacy of attitudes: i.e. the negative connotations created by the word “marijuana” because of the Latino and Mexican roots.

 

July 11, 10 A.M. – 12 P.M.  – The Plant: From Seed to Sale with Bill MacDonald, MSc, Professor, Academic Coordinator, Commercial Cannabis Production Program, Niagara College

Join us to learn from Bill MacDonald, a professor who has experienced the cannabis industry from all sides – as a plant scientist (MSc in Plant Physiology),  he has consulted in the industry, has owned and operated large-scale greenhouses, has been legally growing and cultivating cannabis for a medical patient and is now teaching. This session will include a glimpse into the College Program facilities.

 

July 18, 10 A.M. – 12 P.M.  – Cannabis: Quality, Regulations, Access. Jennifer Maccarone, Professor, Commercial Cannabis Production Program, Niagara College; former UP Cannabis Chief Quality Officer, and Total GXP Inc Consultant.

This session will explore a number of questions: 

  • Regulations: Where have we come from and where are we going?
  • Quality: How do I know cannabis is safe?
  • Access: What can I legally use and where do I get it?
  • Medical vs Recreation: How is Cannabis used?
  • CBD: What is it?
  • What resources are available to assist me in learning more?
